Supreme Court asks Rahul Gandhi to explain Rafale remark

Published

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has been told by the Supreme Court to explain his remarks during the Lok Sabha campaign where he attributed comments to the top court which had ruled on the admissibility of three sets of documents in the Rafale review petition.

“We also make it clear that this court had no occasion to record any such views or make observations in as much as what was decided by this court was the legal admissibility of certain document to which objections were raised,” the Chief Justice of India Rajan Gogoi said.

BJP lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi had last week filed a contempt petition against the Congress president for his attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that she said, “replaced his personal statement as Supreme Court’s order “ and tried to create prejudice.

Gandhi, who was in Amethi to file his nomination papers, had reacted to this setback to the government, saying: “Now the Supreme Court has made it clear that ‘chowkidarji’ has committed a theft… I want to directly challenge that the Supreme Court has stated that you have indulged in corruption.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said Rahul Gandhi’s statement was contempt of contempt of court and was the Congress’s attempt to “perpetrate their own lies”.

In her petition before the Supreme Court, Meenakshi Lekhi had complained that “the words used and attributed by him (Gandhi) to the Supreme Court in the Rafale case has been made to appear something else. He is replacing his personal statement as Supreme Court’s order and trying to create prejudice.”

The Nisarg Heaven Society has slapped a fine of Rs 3.60 lakh on a resident, who works as an advertising executive and is also an animal lover, for feeding stray dogs in the society premises in Kandivali.

Chairman of Nisarg Heaven Society (NHS) Mitesh Bora said: “Around 98 per cent of the society members had passed the resolution to levy fine for feeding dogs in the society premises. Being the society’s chairman, it is my duty to make members to follow the rules framed by the majority of members.”

Bora said: “We have no problem if any society member feeds dogs outside the premises. We are also animal lovers. There is nothing against animal rights. It is a question of human rights too.”

“These dogs are aggressive and they bark at senior citizens, kids, and many others. There is a problem with hygiene too. The rule was made after receiving many complaints from the society members,” Bora said.

Neha Datwani said: “I had an outstanding maintenance bill of Rs 3.60 lakh till March, which also includes Rs 75,000 monthly fine for feeding dogs. They have charged me of Rs 2,500 per day for feeding dogs.”

Datwani said: “In July 2018, the society slapped a fine of Rs 2,500. It went up to Rs 75,000 per month in June. Another member of the society Ketan Shah was also fined for Rs 7,500 in July and thereafter Rs 75,000 per month.”

“The society had stopped charging penalties in November 2018, after I approached the animal rights activists and informed them about these rules, but in vain,” she said.

“They are not stray dogs. They were born in the society premises. I have been taking care of them since their birth. But suddenly the society formed a committee which made a rule of imposing a fine on members for feeding dogs. I am feeding dogs on the humanitarian ground,” said Datwani.

“I am likely to move outside the city soon. I want to clear all dues of the society as my mother and sister will continue to stay here, but I won’t pay the fine,” she said.

“Those were small things. He tells me like this guy is trying to hit in this area so I bowl accordingly. I am an attacking spinner and want to take wickets and he allows me to bowl that way,” Tahir said of Dhoni.

“I decided not to play after the World Cup, purely to give opportunity to youngsters. I don’t want to retire I love the game and have a lot of respect and passion for the game.
